Hygiene Standards:

Overview FAQs Articles Locations

In NSW it is generally the case that hygiene standards apply to the cosmetics industry and in food preparation. In relation to cosmetics, where a beauty treatment service is offered, the provider may  be regulated by the Public Health Act 2010 and Public Health Regulation 2012. The provisions of the Regulation are generally enforced when the practice involves skin penetration, and this extends to waxing.

The provisions of the Regulation generally control:

  • Premises - registration, construction and materials;
  • Equipment used during the provision of the cosmetic service;
  • Hygiene procedures; and
  • Personal hygiene for beauticians.

In relation to food preparation, The New South Wales Government enforces Food Safety Compliance via the Department of Primary Industries Food Authority. The Authority provides for a number of different policies which outline the handling of food in a general retail or industrial manner and offers consumer advice. Within retail the authority offers a number of different policies generally relating to:

  • Raw Fish;
  • Inspections;
  • Charity auctions;
  • Grading; and
  • Cleanliness.

At Navado we may be able to assist in advising whether the hygiene standards apply to and are enforceable against your business, and in circumstances where a notice of a breach has been issued by the relevant Authority. If you are unsure of your obligations we recommend that you obtain legal advice as soon as possible.

If you have been harmed by a suspected contravention of applicable hygiene standards, Navado can also assist you in advising as to your rights and any potential causes of action.
