Within New South Wales the standard Animal Welfare Codes of Practice administered by the NSW Government Department of Primary Industries Agriculture are contained within a series of Animal Trades Codes, including:

  • National Model Codes of Practice for the Welfare of Livestock;
  • Animal Welfare Code of Practice - Animals in Pet Shops;
  • Animal Welfare Code of Practice - Breeding Dogs and Cats;
  • Animal Welfare Code of Practice - Commercial Pig Production;
  • NSW Code of Practice No 1 - Companion Animal Transport Agencies;
  • NSW Code of Practice No 3 - Horses in Riding Centres and Boarding Stables;
  • NSW Code of Practice No 4 - Keeping and Trading of Birds;
  • NSW Animal Welfare Code of Practice No 5 - Dogs and Cats in Animal Boarding Establishments;
  • NSW Animal Welfare Code of Practice No 8 - Animals in Pet Grooming Establishments;
  • NSW Code of Practice No 9 - Security Dogs;
  • Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Land Transport of Livestock) Standards 2013;
  • NSW Code of Practice for Animals Used in Rodeo Events;
  • NSW Guidelines for the Pinioning of Birds; and
  • Code of Practice for Animals in Film and Theatrical Performances.

The codes provide standards that must be satisfied, including those pertaining to the breeding, treatment  and conditions of the animals and ongoing care. If your business is associated with the use, containment or breeding of animals in any way then it may be the case that you are required to comply with various codes.
