Forensic Patients:

Overview FAQs Articles Locations

A Forensic Patient is a person who has, for example, been suspected of committing a serious crime, but may be found not guilty by reason of mental illness, or is found to be of unsound mind and declared presently unfit for trial.

Under the law there are certain provisions concerning Forensic Patients, including the process of review, detention, and release.

The Mental Health Tribunal usually (but not always), makes orders that a Forensic Patient must abide by. These orders for example, may grant a Forensic Patient leave from the detention centre under certain conditions, or the Mental Health Tribunal may review a Forensic Patient and determine that the patient needs to be detained for a further period of time.

At Navado, our Mental Health Lawyers are able to provide you with professional legal advice and assist you in understanding the rights and obligations of a Forensic Patient and advise on any available grounds for appeal. We can also represent you at hearings and assist in the preparation of all required documentation including evidence.

At Navado, our Mental Health Lawyers work closely with our Criminal Lawyers to assist you with your matter, where necessary, to provide you with a complete legal service.
