The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) is an agency that is governed by the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law.
In Australia, there are 14 Health Boards that are required to comply with the abovementioned Legislation. Some of which include:
- Dental;
- Medical;
- Midwifery;
- Nursing;
- Optometry;
- Pharmacy; and
- Psychology.
AHPRA have various roles and responsibilities. One role is to set standards and policies for health practitioners, however AHPRA’s primary role is to protect the Australian public.
If you have a complaint about the behaviour and/or conduct of a health practitioner you may be able to bring your complaint to AHPRA. There are numerous reasons someone may wish to make a complaint. For example, if the health practitioner has:
- Acted in an inappropriate, offensive or unprofessional manner;
- Breached patient confidentiality;
- Performed medical procedures without appropriate consent (eg of a guardian);
- Discriminated against a patient or other third persons;
- Failed to provide a patient with access to their medical records or failed to issue appropriate certifications;
- Operated from premises with poor hygiene or sanitation;
- Registration and training issues.
