AHPRA Complaints:

Overview FAQs Articles Locations

The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) is an agency that is governed by the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law. There are 14 health boards in Australia that are required to follow the above-mentioned legislation. The role of AHPRA is to set standards and policies for all health practitioners and support the 14 National Health Boards. AHPRA’s primary role is to protect the public.

To protect the public, AHPRA has a complaints and notifications division. As an individual you may have reasonable grounds to make a complaint or notification to AHPRA regarding the behaviour and conduct of health practitioners. There are numerous reasons someone may wish to make a complaint. For example, if the health practitioner has:

  • Acted in an inappropriate, offensive or unprofessional manner;
  • Breached patient confidentiality;
  • Performed medical procedures without appropriate consent (eg of a guardian);
  • Discriminated against a patient or other third persons;
  • Failed to provide a patient with access to their medical records or failed to issue appropriate certifications;
  • Operated from premises with poor hygiene or sanitation;
  • Registration and training issues.

Before making a complaint or notification to AHPRA, it is important to understand the merits of your complaint. Our Medical Lawyers are able to advise on the prospects of your complaint.
