Total and permanent disability ("TPD") is when you suffer an ongoing injury or illness which impairs your ability to continue to work. TPD cover provides you with financial support to assist in meeting the cost of rehabilitation, medication and the general costs of living. People can insure themselves against TPD under their life insurance policy.
There are different types of TPD coverage available and it is extremely important to ensure that you have selected the one that is most appropriate in your circumstances, for example your occupation, income, experience and level of health at the time of applying for the insurance may assist in determining the best coverage for you. TPD coverage may be triggered if you are unable to continue to work in a specific job (for example if a teacher is unable to continue to work in that profession due to injury or illness), or may apply only if you do not have the capacity to work in any job (for example if a teacher can no longer work as a teacher but is able to work in an administrative role).
If you believe that you suffer from TPD, you may be entitled to lodge a claim under your insurance policy. You will however require medical evidence to substantiate your TPD claim. In some instances, the insurer may require additional evidence of your TPD. This evidence, together with the specific terms of your policy, will determine whether your claim for TPD is successful.
If you are not satisfied with the response of your insurer following the submission of your TPD claim, there may be an avenue for internal and/ or external review.
The process involved in making a claim can be complex therefore it is recommended you seek professional legal advice to ensure you make the appropriate application to receive the benefits you are entitled to. We can provide you with the necessary guidance to make a TPD claim and assist in the appeals process should an unsatisfactory outcome be obtained at first instance.
