Permanent disablement is where a person suffers from a permanent and prolonged injury or illness which impairs their ability to work. Life insurance providers usually provide consumers with an option to extend their insurance coverage to include total and permanent disability. The coverage may be triggered if the insured is either unable to work in any capacity (including alternative occupations or roles) or unable to work in a specific job. The trigger event will depend on the terms and conditions and scope of the insurance coverage.
If an insured person suffers from a permanent disablement, they will firstly need to obtain medical evidence confirming the disability and the restrictions on their work capacity. A claim may then be made to the insurance company. In some instances, the insurer may require additional evidence of the disability. This evidence, together with the specific terms of the policy, will determine whether a claim for permanent disablement is successful.
If you are not satisfied with the response of your insurer following the submission of your claim, there may be an avenue for internal and/ or external review.
The process involved in making a claim can be complex therefore it is recommended you seek professional legal advice to ensure you make the appropriate application to receive the benefits you are entitled to. We can provide you with the necessary guidance to make a TPD claim and assist in the appeals process should an unsatisfactory outcome be obtained at first instance.
