Accreditation involves the assessment of a medical practice against the RACGP Standards for General Practice (“the Standards”), which set a benchmark for the quality of care, management and training to be provided by medical practices within Australia. Accreditation is not mandatory however, is necessary if the medical centre seeks funding under the Practice Incentives Program (“PIP”). The PIP provides payments in addition to other income available to medical centres such as Medicare rebates.
In order to be eligible to apply for accreditation, the medical practice must satisfy three criteria:
- The medical centre must operate as a general practice;
- The medical services provided to patients must be predominantly general practice services;
- The medical centre must meet all the mandatory indicators prescribed by the Standards.
The advantages of accreditation for your medical centre includes enhancing your centre’s income potential through funding from the PIP, maximising patient confidence in the quality of care provided by members of your team, ensuring that your team remains up to date with the Standards and ‘best practice’ methods through the requirement for continued education and training and to improve the health and safety of patients and your team.
If you require assistance with understanding the Standards or with the accreditation process, or if you are in dispute about the decision made by an Accreditation Agency, we recommend that you obtain legal advice.
