The Distinct Court of New South Wales is the intermediary court forum in the state’s court system. The District Court hears civil litigation claims as well as criminal matters. Appeals in civil matters go to the common law or equity division of the Supreme Court. Appeals from criminal cases go to the Court of Criminal Appeal.
The District Court hears cases that are brought directly to it or which are appealed from the Local Court.
The following are the type of matters that the District Court has jurisdiction to hear:
- Civil claims and litigation.
- Criminal litigation.
- Compensation for workplace injuries (residual jurisdiction).
- Cases under the Work Health and Safety Act 2011.
- Medial tribunal litigation for professional misconduct of medical professionals.
- Local Court appeals.
- Children’s Court appeals.
