Gifts to Animal Charities:

Overview FAQs Articles Locations

Gifts can be made to an animal charity at any time, including upon death, in accordance with the testamentary intentions set out in the deceased’s will.

If you elect to leave a gift to a charity under your will, we recommend that you seek legal advice on the preparation of your will to ensure the following:

  • The charity is accurately named. Confusion may arise as to your intentions if the charity’s correct name is not indicated as there are usually several charities of similar names;
  • The gift is clearly specified; and
  • The provision is in accordance with any guidelines prescribed by the charity.

It is generally not possible to provide directions in your will as to how the charity should apply the gift. The gift will typically be utilised at the discretion of the charity. Some of the most common applications include:

  • Providing temporary homes for animals;
  • Providing veterinary treatment for abandoned, neglected or injured animals;
  • Research into diseases or conditions affecting animals.
