Student visas:

Overview FAQs Articles Locations
There is one student visa subclass for students and their dependant applicants, and one student visa subclass for guardians of overseas students. All of these visas are temporary visas. The visas that are available are:

Student Visa (subclass 500)

Replacing the seven visa subclasses previously available, all students and members of their family unit now apply for the subclass 500 visa if they wish to study in Australia. Courses that can be studied while on this visa type include:

• English language courses;

• Primary or secondary school courses;

• Certificate I-IV, diplomas and advanced diplomas;

• Bachelor, masters or postgraduate degrees;

• Postgraduate research programs; • Secondary school exchange programs;

• Specialised training or study courses approved by the Defence or Foreign Minister.

There are a range of criteria that students must meet for a visa to be granted.

Student Guardian Visa (subclass 590)

Student guardian visas permit an adult relative of a student to accompany and reside with the international student. Generally, the international student must be under 18 years of age. However, there are some exceptions to this rule. The Minister and his delegates retain the right to request a wide range of documentation in support of a student visa application. The wide level of discretion associated with a student visa, as well as the criteria applicants for student visas must meet per the regulations, mean many prospective international students or their families seek out the assistance of a Registered Migration Agent or Immigration Lawyer. If you intend to come to Australia, it is crucial that you get proper immigration advice to avoid your case being prejudiced.
