A Workplace Health and Safety Management System is a policy which sets out an organisation’s or company’s commitment to continuous improvement of health and safety through a framework of consultation, specific responsibilities and the management systems that are to be implemented. The objective of a workplace health and safety management system is to promote the health, safety and welfare of all the organisation’s or company’s staff, students, contractors and visitors.  A workplace health and safety management system should generally facilitate the compliance with Workplace and Safety laws such as the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 and Work Health and Safety Regulation 2011.

The contents of a Workplace Health and Safety Management System usually include identification and control of hazards and risks, the health and safety legal requirements applicable and procedures to review and keep up to date, health and safety objectives and targets and also the basis for individual work units, in their health and safety plans, to set local objectives and targets.

A Workplace Health and Safety Management System will often specify the responsibilities and accountability of management and personnel for such workplace safety obligations.  It will also identify the resources provided for in the provision of the budget allocation to the Workplace Health and Safety team and the overall budget of the individual work units. It should also identify the current qualification and training experience of its members and training needs in relation to performing work activities competently, including health and safety training. If you have enquiries about health and safety is managed in your workplace you may consult with Health and Safety Representatives (HSR's) or other authorised personnel. Your company or organisation should also have health and safety documentation available to employees and other members.
