The main purpose of attending the Traffic Offenders Program is “To educate traffic offenders to change their attitudes and demonstrated behaviours to their driving”. Your attendance at the traffic offenders program can assist in demonstrating to the Court that you recognise that you have made a mistake and that you are serious about improving your driving behaviour. The Traffic Offenders Program is designed to increase your understanding of your social obligations, particularly where they relate to traffic laws.
You can apply to the Court to attend the traffic offenders program, or we can apply on your behalf for you to attend the traffic offenders program. In certain circumstances, the Court may direct that you attend the traffic offenders program. If you allowed by the Court to attend the traffic offenders program, your case will be adjourned for sentencing, allowing sufficient time for you to complete the traffic offenders program.
Each location where the Traffic Offenders Program is held is runs slightly differently, however generally you will be required to attend eight (8) presentations over seven (7) weeks. The topics that you will most likely cover during your traffic offenders program include:
- The Legal System
- What is Defensive Driving
- Substance Abuse – The use of Alcohol and Drugs
- The Police and their involvement in traffic matters
- The Ambulance service and how they assist in traffic accidents
- Sentencing options available to the Courts for traffic matters
- Organ donation
- Spinal, Brain, and other serious injuries as the result of a traffic accident
Generally, you will be required to submit an assignment or report on what you have learnt throughout your attendance at the traffic offenders program. The content of your report can assist in displaying to the Court how your attitude has changed in relation to your traffic offence, and how your driving effects other road users and the general public.
The traffic offenders program is generally run at local PCYC centres located across Sydney and throughout country New South Wales. Depending on the location and provider of the traffic offenders program, there may be a fee payable for your participation which can range from $50 to $180.
