Employers have a responsibility to ensure that the workplace they provide to their employees a safe environment. Staff training in workplace safety may be mandatory for some industries as required by Occupational Health and Safety Laws in New South Wales.   It has been estimated that around 400 people die from work accidents each year, and 500,000 suffer injuries which result in their having to take time off work. Therefore, ensuring that your employer complies with their training obligations in workplace safety is of crucial importance.

Staff Training in workplaces safety can include first aid (facilities, staff, training and allowances), and protective clothing, footwear and equipment.  There may be allowances for hazardous conditions (including disability allowances, dirt money and height money included in an award or Enterprise Bargaining Agreement. Some industries have highly detailed requirements in workplace safety training in industries such as the maritime, waterside and mining.

Current Workplace Safety laws in place include the Occupational Health and Safety Act 1983 and the Workplace Relations Act 1996 (Cth) and these laws create certain  rights , obligations for employers and certain protections for employees. Australian Workplace Agreements (AWAs) and certified agreements cannot override state or territory OHS law.

The promotion of safety and health at work requires the function of efficient management. It is important real progress is impossible without the full cooperation and commitment of all employees. It is important for employees to be aware of procedures and policies that allow them to participate fully in the making and monitoring of arrangements for safety and health at their place of work.
