In NSW, Psychologists are required to be registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency pursuant to the Health Practitioner National Law (NSW). Pursuant to the New South Wales Government State Insurance Regulatory Authority, there are several standards which the practicing Psychologist may be required to satisfy, for example:

  • Responsibility is owed to the patient;
  • They must not be discriminatory;
  • Confidentiality must be exercised;
  • Boundaries with patients must be formed;
  • Competence must be demonstrated.

It is important in matters of Psychologist compliance to recognise that there may be a number of different professional regulations which apply. For example the certification of a Psychologist can take a number of different levels, where each level requires different levels of compliance.

If you are a Psychologist and are unsure of the standards with which you need to comply or require advise as to whether you have achieved compliance, of if an allegation of a breach has been brought to your attention, Navado can assist.

If you are a patient or member of the community and have concerns about the conduct or practices of a Psychologist, we may be able to assist by advising as to whether there has been a breach of the standards applicable and whether additional causes of action such as negligence apply.
