What is the role of the Consumer, Trader and Tenancy Tribunal (CTTT)?

The primary role of the Consumer, Trader and Tenancy Tribunal or CTTT is to assist individuals or entities deal with disputes relating to, amongst a variety of other things, home building and construction disputes. It is an independent statutory body established by the Consumer, Trader and Tenancy Tribunal Act 2001. The CTTT is generally cheaper, less formal, and more efficient than going to Court. For these reasons, many Sydney Building Lawyers and Sydney Construction Solicitors recommend their clients seek a resolution from the CTTT in the event of a dispute. Our Sydney Construction Lawyers are extensively experienced in acting for builders, architects and consumers in the CTTT, with a focus on delivering strategic legal solutions to building and construction disputes.

The CTTT has a Home Building Division that hears disputes between home owners, tradespeople and insurers about residential building work up to the value of $500,000.

‘Home building’ refers to any residential building work done by a building contractor or tradesperson.  This may include the construction of a new home, building of an extension to an existing home, the installation of a swimming pool or renovation of a bathroom.

The CTTT assists home owners and builders alike. It can hear applications about defective work, non-payment of invoices, contractual disputes and associated insurance claims.
